I am volunteering at a hospital and a 17 girl does not leave me alone. She is incredibly attractive and she is going to win this war of attrition. From what I heard , my state is vicious in this legal area but I never heard of a cases where the girl was 17. Do I need to run away before I do something stupid or are there any exceptions/protections for such cases?

Please leave your job immediately and never ever again seek employment ANYWHERE involving those more vulnerable than yourself.

That includes 17 year old patients in a hospital setting. If you can't control yourself, you have no business whatsoever being there.

How about looking the little girl in the eye and saying, "I am sorry. You seem like a nice person but having anything romantic to do with you would send me to prison. Why don't you go find a nice boy somewhere and go out for ice cream?"

or,

"I'm sorry, this isn't going to happen. There is no way I am going to limit my social life to only places a child can go. I would much prefer going to a bar with my buddies than Chuck E Cheese to see if I can beat the high score in Wac a Mole."

or,

"Sorry, I have no interest in dating anyone whose entire social calendar involves the word "Prom"".

I hadn't thought of that.

If you can't control your impulses, get out of the hospital and go seek help.

Seriously? If, as an adult, you are not able to control your own impulses/choices, it's time you seek employment where these "temptations" do not exist. If you like, I can forward you the email to the latest pyramid scheme to breach my filter...

You really are old enough to control yourself. If you can't? Then perhaps you need to avoid being in situations where you're exposed to underage females. The rest of us will hand you your jewels in a heartbeat.

In addition to all the good advice you've been given, I'll just add that having sex with her would be a felony. You would carry that record around with you forever:
Arizona Statutory Rape Laws - Labor Law Talk Blog

And if you're in a position of authority over her, the penalties can be even harsher.

In an incredibly pertinent coincidence, this is the same thing that convicted child molesters say about their prison boyfriends. Go figure!

No defenses in your case. You know the girls age, you are above 19 y.o and no attending high school, and you are not her spouse.
If you ask me, the law is stupid and puritan. The age of consent can be lowered to 16. But now the age is 18 in Arizona, and you must obey the law. If not, you can get jail time and registration as a sex offender that will screw your life totally. So make your decision wisely. There are a lot of sexy 18 y.o. girls begging for men...

So is a statutory rape law stupid or just this one?

At what point should men be allowed to take advantage of children?

If it stops one person... like the schmoe that posted here... from touching that hot candy striper in the hall because otherwise he has no impulse control whatso ever, I am all for it.

After all... I am pretty sure he hasn't asked her for her ID (she is "incredible", after all)... so for all we know she is 15.

No, statutory rape law is not stupid, and I'm against taking advantage on children. And, I think that the age of consent can be lowered to 16, as it is in very high developed countries like France, Germany, UK, Norway, Netherlands, and even in a lot of American States. I think that 16 y.o in the West are mature enough to have sex.
This guy is not a schmoe. At least he has the brains to come and ask about the consequences of his potential deeds.
17 is not a baby. She can already serve in the military and legally to take decisions of life and death. I think that we shouldn't treat 16-17 y.o. "almost adults", like they were five. I believe that in that way we won't have so many spoiled 24 y.o. brats that demands Child Support form their parents.

Cool. Write your congressman. We are not a "gee whiz, the law should be this way" site... we are a legal site.

Actually, he is. Most grown men don't think underage children are either "incredible" or unavoidable.

17 is not a baby. She can already serve in the military and legally to take decisions of life and death.
Please post the statutes that give a 17 year old the ability to do ANY of those things without the consent of their legal guardian.

You are wrong. 17 is NOT 18 light.

But we will have an awful lot more "incredible" 16 year olds with babies of their own. Won't that be awesome?

Um... that's quite a tangent you are on there. How did we go from a guy wanting to schtup a teenager to your child support issues?

Did you miss the part where the 17 year old in question is a PATIENT where the OP works?!

To be fair the OP never stated that the 17 year old was a patient. I think its fair to assume that the 17 year old was a patient, but there is a slight chance that the 17 year old is either a volunteer or someone visiting a chronically ill patient.

Of course.
