What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? TN

A credit card with a rather high balance ( approx. $10,000) is in the very recently deceased husband's name only. There are no assets in the estate above what will be used to pay funeral expenses, and medical bills, and there is limited personal property. Does the new widow have the responsibility to continue paying the balance on this card? If she does not, will it destroy her credit? Can they sue her? Force her into bankruptcy? There is no will. Would doing probate of this small estate release her from this debt? Does she need to do so for any other reason?

Forgot to mention, this was a business expenses credit card. Will this be a problem when filing income taxes for the year if it is used to verify business expenses?

Well, I could see it being problematic for her to claim expenses that were paid by a card that will not ever be paid off. However, if her name and social are in no way connected with the card, not even as a registered user, then it cannot effect her credit score.

He did own one vehicle. Could the credit company put a lien on the vehicle? Though the value of the vehicle is much less than the funeral expenses.
