What is the name of your state? Virginia

The other day I was in a Rite Aid in Richmond, Va. and was purchasing alcohol for myself. The lady at the register told me I couldn't buy it because one of my friends that was with me was not 21. She said it was state law? Is that correct? Also she gave me tons of attitude and I walked out. My other friend who was still in the store and purchasing some products. The lady at the register then said to her manager right next to my friend "We have the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone, even if I don't like the way they look". Can someone just say that or is that discrimination?
-Thanks

If you can could I get a response more on the 2nd part of the question about what she said, that's the part that concerns me the most.

Please no more talk of this hurricane stuff, this isn't a board about weather, go somewhere else with that, thank you.

The lady at the register said that to the manager, and that was all that was said. She basically agreed with her.

Here in Florida as a restaurant manager and former owner I have the right to refuse anyone alcohol, especially if there is a "MINOR" sitting at the same table. Is it a "LAW"...I don't think so, however it is the companies policy and also their best interest!!!

The hurricane just missed us here in Fort Lauderdale by shifting slightly Northwest when it hit the coast. Yesterday when it impacted the gulf coast we started getting bands of wind, some rain & and the best damn lighting show I have ever seen!!!! I know that it was a monster and killed several people so I will not make "Light" of it (no pun intended). I went through the monster of all "CANES"...ANDREW and I know how those people are feeling right about now.
But anyway, thanks for your concern, and for those who read and responded to my thread reagarding the "CANE" and my employees, THEY ALL SHOWED UP :D

OOPS I was thinking of Dan in Flordia, but you are getting also up in virginia! Well they said it was going to be bigger than expected, maybe bigger than Andrew.
In 1996 I was in NC at Camp LeJuene in between Hugo and Flora I think, they got hit hard twice within a month!

Typically a person purchasing alcohol for a minor isn't going to bring them into the store to do so. However, the person behind the register was probably trying to protect her job and tried to validate her reasoning for refusing to sell the alcohol to you to her manager by saying :
We have the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone, even if I don't like the way they look".
Discrimination?, no, more than likely the person was just trying to do her job so she wouldn't get into trouble or fined.

In 1988 in California, my house was hit by a tornado, took the roof off, my boss expected me at work, because my job involved repairing utilities from the storm, so there sat my house without a roof while I restored utilities for "storm victims"! The wind is so caprecious, we recovered a lot of stuff, one thing would sit untouched while something next to it was gone. The classic though is straw blown through fence boards, defies all the laws of physics!
We are used to earthquakes here and we get no warning!

dan148, any idea how Merritt Island weathered it? My sister lives there. Can't get a hold of her today. But she was fine just prior to things really busting loose.

When Andrew hit here we literally had a tornado drop in our backyard, it was the scariest thing I have ever seen so I can't imagine what you were feeling when it actually hit your house. Luckily for me and my family I own an older model house (1974 to be exact) and these homes were built like "ROCKS" so my house really didn't get to much cosmetic damage, however every tree in my yard was uprooted and sat on my roof, and I think everyone of my neighbors patio furniture ended up in my pool. I want to move to "Cali" the Food & Beverage business there is said to be "Booming" and the average salary for my position in "Cali" far exceeds mine, however, wifey doesn't want to go becasue.......you guessed it.....Earthquakes!!!

I haven't heard much of anything regarding Merritt Island, I do know that the following cities suffered the most: Fort Meyers, Naples, Port Charolett, Punta Gorda.
The following counties that got hit hard: DeSoto, Lee, Sarasota

Do any of the the cities and/or counties sound familiar as I am not familiar with Merritt Island.
I will be more than happy to research my local paper for you if you need me too....

Lawn furniture! My son almost got hit by a peice of it flying, and round tables went spinning through the air like tops, we recovered all the furniture. It pretty much just hit our house comming up a valley, the debries hit neighbors, they were mad because ours was covered by insurance while their damage wasn't because it was less than their dedutables.
I have lived and worked through some very bad earthquakes, if you make it through the first 15-30 seconds you are usually ok, they are brief. I think it is worse anticipating a tornedo or a hurricane, but I am used to earthquakes.
I've been to Ft. Myers before I understand that Sandibel Is got hit real hard, that WAS the shell capital of the state of Florida, wonder if that will be true in the future, how long for the marine environment to recover?
