I haven't heard much of anything regarding Merritt Island, I do know that the following cities suffered the most: Fort Meyers, Naples, Port Charolett, Punta Gorda.
The following counties that got hit hard: DeSoto, Lee, Sarasota

Do any of the the cities and/or counties sound familiar as I am not familiar with Merritt Island.
I will be more than happy to research my local paper for you if you need me too....
**Merritt Island is just due east of Orlando, just off the coast. Cocoa Beach, JFK Space Center. Just wondering how hard it was hit. She was unable to go to a shelter beause they were all full. She said everyone on the west coast came over there and now they were all in the line of storm.

I can tell you a tornado story. I am from Michigan.

When I was 9 I was riding in the car with my father, mother and brother driving down the highway and a tornado was coming at us. No shelter, no overpass to get underneath. My father pulled over and dragged our hineys into the ditch while the tornado went overhead. That was the scariest thing I have ever been through and do not wish to ever go through anything like that again. No wonder why I am a little skittish of storms now.

I hope that everyone in the wake of Charley is doing Ok.

You talked to her, and everything is OK I hope?? Just west of Orlando and onward east off the coast the storm did not cause the type of damage as it did over on the west coast. Thank god, my two nephews and my sister were at Disney World...However Disney closed at about 1pm yesterday and they had to stay in the hotel lobby.

Tornadoes are really the only type of natural disaster that I fear (of course I have never experienced an earthquake). I discovered this fear when I was in GA in April 1998 opening a restaurant. We had a string of tornadoes come through over a period of one week straight. It was unbelievable, every night there was a news update stating that 1,2,3,4 or more tornadoes are on the ground heading in my directions. I remember one night like it was yesterday, I was in the restaurant around 9pm on a Friday (so you can imagine how busy I was) when all of a sudden the hail started beating on the windows, it sounded like someone was throwing baseballs. A police officer runs in and tells us all to get under the tables "A tornado is 1/2 blk up hwy 92 coming right towards the bulding. We heard it and felt a little shaking but it really never hit us.

**I'm glad to hear that your relatives are o.k. We have no word from her as of yet. I have a nephew and his wife and child, a niece her husband and two children, and of course their mom (my sister). The communication lines seem to be having a problem. So I hope we will get word soon.

I tried to get info. on line but it is difficult because of the chaos. I did see that the path off the hurricane (the red line of winds) went right through their area. But my sister lives in a block home so hopefully the design with stood the winds.

Tried to watch cnn for anything in that area. Haven't caught anything yet so hopefully they didn't get hit too terribly.

I don't believe there is anything to worry about if they were in that area other than Utility problems (as you have figured that out already) and maybe some minimal cosmetic damage. Personal injury was held to a minimum once the storm left the west coast of Fl.
I think storm died down to a "Cat 1 maybe 2" by that time. But either case keep us informed.
Thanks, HT & Kidoday

**Yes, thank you. We are hoping for the best. I did see that it had died down by the time it got to them. If you hear of anything in the papers or news down there about that area, please post back. Thank you.

I am reading the orlando and titusville paper now...There is no mention of injury and all the attractions reopened today, so thats good news. A couple of small planes were flipped at a small airport, and some damage to homes are reported as well phone and power outages...But nothing to drastic in that area. So, I would imagine you would be hearing something soon. I will keep reading and will post back.

**I appreciate your time. I think I can rest a little easier for now. I'll have to turn in for now. I'll check back in the morning. When I watch CNN, I get mixed feelings.

**Thank you. I found the following: More than 2,000 customers were without power on Merritt Island. Restoring power to all customers could take "several days," County spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said, meaning many residents will be in for a hot, miserable weekend.

What is the name of your state? Virginia

The other day I was in a Rite Aid in Richmond, Va. and was purchasing alcohol for myself. The lady at the register told me I couldn't buy it because one of my friends that was with me was not 21. She said it was state law? Is that correct? Also she gave me tons of attitude and I walked out. My other friend who was still in the store and purchasing some products. The lady at the register then said to her manager right next to my friend "We have the right to refuse to sell alcohol to anyone, even if I don't like the way they look". Can someone just say that or is that discrimination?
-Thanks

If you can could I get a response more on the 2nd part of the question about what she said, that's the part that concerns me the most.

Please no more talk of this hurricane stuff, this isn't a board about weather, go somewhere else with that, thank you.
**Yes, you are right. I didn't find anywhere else to go to get the peace of mind that my relatives were safe.

But I thought your questions were answered. The store has a right to refuse service to anyone. She told you, it was because you were with a minor (she must of felt uncomfortable with that). Then she was rude to you and you probably weren't happy about the fact she wasn't going to sell to you. I'm sure you were being very polite and she was just having one of them bit*** days. Then she verified it with her manager that she had the right to turn someone down.
The comment she made I think was rude too. But I don't know what prompted her to say such a thing. Do you think because she didn't sell to you; that she was discriminating against you because of your looks?

**Footnote--all relatives are fine the "trunk lines were down, thanks everyone.
