What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NYC

I don't know if its law or local custom, but on alternate-side-of-the-street parking days, people on the forbidden side of the street double park along all of the streets in my neighborhood of Washington Heights (a traffic cop once told me its allowed in certain portions or the area and only on non-double-yellow-lined streets). Thing is, if your double parked for a second past when alternate-side is over, they can issue you a double parking ticket. So, I came out 10 minutes from when alternate-side ended and the guy was issuing me a ticket. Now, I don't suggest there be an indefinite amount of time to move your car, but there should be some leeway, especially since the city requires our patience often enough.

Also, since someone stole my sideview mirror, they issued me a ticket for "missing equipment".

My real question is, do I have to pay at all? The car is registered and insured to a New Jersey address-

Total tickets: $160.

NYCDOT - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Traffic Enforcement Parking Tickes Towed Vehicle

There isn't an "indefinite" amount of time. There's no rule that says you can double park under these conditions period. You're trying to quantify a time that doesn't exist.

Just because someone else broke/stole your mirror is not an excuse to not get it fixed.

You betcha you have to either go fight them or pay. The fact that you have Jersey tags doesn't exempt you from the parking rules and you rack up enough you may find your car "missing" one day.

If you really are a NYC resident, you're also violating the law by not registering the car properly.

but...

its not my car, i was borrowing it. so, it is legally registered and insured in New Jersey.

as i said, i don't know what the deal is with the double-parking rule, but i once asked a traffic agent and they gave me the low-down on the rules, but they didn't mention whether it was law or custom. but, its an accepted custom, and the whole neighborhood does it.

and as for the stolen mirror. u probably don't live in a neighborhood where people steal your mirror. this is the second mirror thats been stolen off the side of this car (when i've brrowed it on two separate occasions), and that gets expensive. more expensive than an occasional ticket.

If it gets expensive, you could sell the car...

Or find off-street parking (which will get rid of the street cleaning issue as well).

The bottom line is that just because the double parking you describe is often overlooked that does not make it legal.

Every time you park illegally you take a risk or being ticketed and/or towed. The "everyone else did it so I thought it was okay" defense does not work.

You dont have to be such a rude, blunt person
I find it strange that you chose THIS thread to resurrect and make an inane comment to.

ETA: Ahh, this is the guy who got a double refund and wondered whether he needed to give it back.
