The snippet provided really doesn't tell us much (for either position).
I agree that contracts need to be reviewed in their entirety ... but even with only the snippet to go on, there is clearly an offer and acceptance and (apparently) a capacity to enter into a contract, and consideration. Employment resulted from the mutually signed document.
