Can an employee at a large hardware store chain in Washington state be fired legally for taking merchandise out of a dumpster? This employee was taking out the trash and noticed a cardboard box that looked sealed. When he took a closer look, he noticed the box wasn't empty and that it had a small wooden toolbox inside. Since it was in the trash, he thought it was public domain and took it home. He was so excited to have found it (he's 70 years old), he told some other employees about his lucky find. A couple of days later, his manager called him in to his office and fired him for theft. Does he have any recourse?
