Flexible Spending Account --filing deadline

Has anyone had any luck with this? HR (new employee) misinformed that one can claim as regular employees i.e. 3 months after year end as long as the claim was for the period employed with the company. When I tried to submit a claim 2 months after leaving the company, I was told deadline was one month after leaving the company. Its a big amount and the company gains to benefit with their own lie.
