NO, they are not always serious. It's the level of thinking of the person replying. Trying to be cute, witty or whatever. If you can't give real advice, which you can't, then you shouldn't reply.

what, you mean like the time my house was destroyed by a hurricane, and so was the office building i worked in so my employer just decided to close shop? how's that for stepping "outside your little world"? compared to my relocation costs $25 IS NOTHING!

what don't you try this? i know plenty of old people in my neighborhood who can't maintain their lawns themselves. i help some of them sometimes because it improves my neighborhood, not to mention that it's just a good thing to do as a human being. all i ask for is a glass of water occasionally. but you know what i get sometimes instead? $25!
