HIPAA violation

Let's see if I get this right, a person is treated in ER, possible leaves with a cast, and a person sends a get will card.

Curious as to what medical record was violated by somebody seeing a person in a cast and sending a card. Accessing personal info file is far different than accessing medical records.

I can understand that if you had not given out addresses to people that how they got personal information could pose a bigger problem with who has access and to what level of access people can reach who may not have any authorization to do so.

Might be worth discussing this issue with management and see what their philosophy is and if they want to restrict personal files and access.

I am also a nurse and work in the Emergency department. Let me just say this:
When I take care of a co-worker and then someone comes up to me and says do you know if she was there or have you heard, you should know that I am allowed to say you are there and stable. If you were a co-worker of mine who was injured, however, I might say, oh yes, she was there but home now and doing well. Hey, why dont we send her a get well card?" I never would have thought that such a gesture would get me into trouble or that someone would get upset by it. I think you are being very petty. I could see you being upset if you were diagnosed with cancer or aids but a fractured arm? That is just ridiculous. You are nit picking, looking for something. What, I do not know.
