And...
I looked up a converter for a 2004 and found it for under $200 - granted, it's not a "Ford" converter...
they are not actually very expensive in the over all picture of things. As long as the vehicle has less than 80,000 miles, it wouldn't cost the OP anything. If it is over 80k miles, I would simply go to an aftermarket repair shop.

Thank you for all the responses.

The problem is around here we are about 100 country miles from civilization. That's why we took it across the state line in the first place. The car is still sitting in the service lot...with about a foot of dust on it. I would expect more from a 2004 car. I think we're done with Ford.

Unless you have talked with Ford, don;t blame Ford. This may be a dealer problem, which is not Ford. A dealership is not part of Ford nor do they represent Ford.

If you haven;t called a Ford zone rep, get thyself on the phone. If the zone rep tells you they are back ordered, that would be a bit more believable since the zone rep DOES represent Ford, not the dealer.

BTW xylene; a dealership gets paid from Ford for doing any work under Ford warranty. They want to shuffle everything through the dealership as fast as possible. That is one of the major money makers for a dealership garage.

Finally got our car back...

Just to let you know we finally got our Explorer back after about 2 months of waiting for the part to come in. We called Ford HQ a couple of weeks ago. I don't know that calling helped any. They called us back a few times for status updates. Apparently, it's just a part that's hard to get a hold of. I had just never heard of anyone having to wait so long for a car to be serviced.
