Insurance claim - contractor extending time and cant take off work anymore

Quick summary.....
Insurance claim submitted 4/30/2018
4 different adjusters came to house and did adjustment
Contractor stated that it would take no more than 2 days...possibly 3
Came out and pulled sample of flooring 2 weeks prior to starting project and knew exactly what was wrong and what it would take
Subs here starting the work said "Oh no, this will take a full week to do"
Told I was going to have a crew to get it done
Subs are from 350 miles away
Have told the insurance company and contractors I cant take work off to do this from the begining
To help, I took vacation 2 weeks ago so they could perform the work
They didn't want to (Remember, this claim has been open since 4/30/18)
I compromised and had my son stay home from work Friday 8/17/18 to oversee (remember, they told me Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday)
Subs cant get it done and will need and extra week
I want to fire them right now....take the checks given to me by the insurance company and fix myself (I have other quotes)
What is my recourse and is this going to put me farther in the hole?
BTW: I have emails stating and proving everything I said above
Note: Contractor has not received a dime from me or the insurance company (according to the Subs, contractor hasn't spent any material money on this project either)...I have all the checks
Contractor also stated he is not affiliated with my insurance company...."I, hired them through my insurance company"

Does your contract spell out any required completion date and or a time is of the essence clause?
Contractors seem to have an infinite supply of excuses ...especially when money is not flowing ...and subs get screwed ....about 3 days after you throw them off the job they will show up with claims about damages and lost profits ...and to some extent law favors that a contractor be allowed to cure his problems .

Absent this being an exotic inlaid hardwood floor...a sub from 350 miles away reads a bit odd at the very least.

I suggest you get some paid legal advice as to how to play hardball with a contractor and his subs in your jurisdiction .

PS Your personal scheduling problems probably carry zero legal weight

One random guess...the general has such a record of screwing subs that nobody local will work for him?

No...the contract doesn't have a time limit on it but his emails do. They were suppose to be here all day today and haven't seen anyone. I have all the checks....I want to fire them but don't know where i stand legally. Have no idea what they would charge me for work completed or other things they may throw on thus far

While it reslly isn’t a valid legal point of argument, I wouldn’t allow unescorted contractors in my house either


And I work in the construction world.

I do hvac service and installs for a living, maybe we have a more trusting customer base. many times myself/co workers are left unattended in customers homes..

I’ve worked without an attendant myself.

That doesn’t mean I would allow it in my home. For many reasons, (not all of them involve concerns of issues such as theft), I would not allow an unattended worker in my home.
