What is the name of your state? Maryland

Does anyone know if I can track down the IP address from an email address? I kept getting these seemingly random, but very personal emails, which I think are from my ex. If I have the email address, can I somehow figure out the IP address? And if so, how?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

re: averad http://www.stopspam.org/email/headers.html

I skimmed the link and not having much time to read it, saved for a time when I can actually read it... good info though

with that said, I didn't see a procedure for determining the ISP within the text of the link, although it may have been in there somewhere.

So in an effort to help OP, I will add my discounted 2 cents.

In any email, there should be an option to expand headers; or to access the email properties. The ISP will be somewhere in there. Each email is different. Yahoo has the "expand headers" option at the bottom of the email body. Outlook Express has it (from memory, haven't used in a while) at the top in one of the tabs, probably "tools", but as I recall, it is in "Properties" within "tools"... somewhere.

Once you have the ISP, and information about the trip the emails are taking to get to you, you can narrow down pretty closely who is sending them... then what? I don't know. Perhaps contacting your own ISP and reporting it? Hoepfully someone else will come along with the next step here.

Good luck.

Then the OP would need to contact the ISP from where the e-mails were sent. The abuse department of that ISP will require you submit the e-mail including the header data.

You will be unable to get the ISP to release the users information so your only option is to report the e-mails to the abuse department. Do not submit the e-mail or complaints to your ISP as they wont care.

Op should google E-mail spam

Not particularly. But then again, I would never actual OPEN an email if I didn't know who sent it.

There are several ways to find out where the email was sent from. But w/o further information from the OP, I don't want to help someone with potentially ill intentions.

Where's the legal question in all this? This should be on Geeks r Us.

Yes you can track it back to the ISP but there's no way of knowing who the user is unless you can get the ISP to give you the information.

A simple spam filter seems like it whoud be the answer to your question.

True for 98% of the population. But there are more than 12,000 former co-workers that can determine the ip address, home address, longitude and latitude, computer forensics study and the phone number of the offender ;)

I question why this poster would even need this information.
