The easiest way to protect yourself on eBay is ALWAYS use Paypal and ALWAYS use a credit card. That gives you two methods to get your money back. If Paypal is no help most credit cad companies will refund you without any hassles.

ALWAYS use a credit card for all other pruchases online. The credit card company will refund your money and go to bat against the seller.

STOP paying by personal check and money order. They offer no protection.

It's THAT SIMPLE.

biglittle;

I agree that Ebay and other online facilitators are an essential part of our retail economy, but if you do a search you'll find that Paypal is just as much a problem as it is a solution.

biglittle ~ I agree with you about Paypal and would have paid with it, except that after I won the auction I realized that the seller did not have a Paypal account. I had to pay by check or money order.
(Dallas) Yes, paypal does have problems, but I have not had one with them.
A credit card would have been a great way to pay, but again she had no account.
I have been in negotiations with her and she is supposed to be sending me a refund because my mail carrier stated that she did not deliver any packages to my house during the specified time. Also seller had no receipt showing she sent items. Still have not seen the money though and it has been 10 days since we came to the agreement. We'll see.

I know Paypal has its issues, but Paypal generally sides with the buyer in most disputes. As a seller, you have to be cautious and follow Paypal's rules one what address to ship to and within a certain time frame to protect yourself.

Also, that's why I said pay with a credit card. That gives you two levels of protection.

There is a reason some seller's only accept checks and money orders. A lot of them are scammers or are generally just bad sellers (don't ship in a timely manner, etc.) I avoid those sellers at all costs.

I would suck up this loss as it's probably really not worth getting real invloved in.

In the future, always check and read a sellers feedback prior to placing a bid!! I look at the feedback before I bid, I see if they have 100% feedback or not. If they don't, I look at the comments . . . If they have 20,000 sales, and 3 negative feedbacks, I take that with a grain of salt.

I have never had a problem with paypal, but I have seen sellers who don't take it, and that is because paypal charges us sellers a (small) fee for every sale - so sellers pay twice - once to post the auction and hen to accept the payment. I accept the payment via paypal because it's quicker and more convenient for buyer and seller.

I have been bitten by Paypal as a buyer and seller. I bought an expensive item paid by Paypal and never recieved it. Seller gave refund only to have Paypal take it at the 30 day mark and said it was from a stolen credit card. Tried to file claim and was told it was to late. Paypal wanted their money because I was in the hole so they went and reversed all the previous month's transactions until my balance was brought to a positive. So in simple terms if I paid a seller so much money for a shirt a week prior it was now reversed and I had the seller barking up my tree and basically had to pay the seller again.

Selling isn't any better because now you have people just using Paypal and CC's to get stuff for free. Even if Paypal sides with the seller they still keep your money for 3 months.

I just wanted to update this thread. I had been in dispute with the seller through ebay. She agreed to refund me the money, but after 2 weeks I had not received it. She ignored my e-mails and I just left her a negative feedback. I knew this would happen, so don't jump on me. I just wanted to leave her name and handle so others will not buy from this seller.

Ogdensburg, NY : Where she lives
I actually have her home address, phone number and e-mail address, but I am going to be nice and NOT post them. :)
I will never shop ebay again. I just looked at their own message board and the complaints are through the roof. They have got to clean up their act or they won't have any buyers left.
