But generally, employees don't get "dinged" for using a scheduled day off, only for calling out unexpectedly.

Sure they do. If I have an appointment on Monday and can't be at work, and that is not my normal day off, it is "dinged" against my PTO days. It is great to try to work appointments and such around your days off, however, it is not very likely a court is going to schedule around my days off.

I used up a sick day from work which I'll get a ding for
I take that as he gets a black mark, demerit, whatever you want to call it in addition to the loss of money

Yesterday, I had another court date. I have a specialist lawyer that is far from the court house. We had a 10:00 am court time and we get there, and no Judge. Signs on the door say that another judge is handling the cases that day. "That" judge happens to be the wife of the opposing lawyer in my case. So, yesterday will probably cost me approximately $700 to 800 due to at least a 1 hour travel time (each direction) and 45 minutes to reschedual and I used up a sick day from work which I'll get a ding for. What can I do about this? Or is this one of those things that's a "California Divorce"?
Thanks for any suggestions.....
I've tried a lot of lawsuits wishing the judge would have called in sick.

Yes, that's true. Many companies do have that kind of policy. I have personally converted two companies to the PTO method, although my current employer uses the standard V/S/P method.

However, the OP did not say he took a PTO day. He said he took a sick day. Therefore, the likelihood is that his company does not roll them all into one. Regardless of what some other companies may do.
But shoot, when I call in, it's always sick time. In fact, when you look on my paystub, there is no mention of PTO. It's ALL sick (or vacation).
