Landlord requiring full bank statements

Hi,

I am currently in a lease and I have already paid rent for a few months. Recently there was a mix-up with the online rent pay system and it says we got charged for rent twice. It was confirmed by us that it was only actually once. The error still shows up on the website and now they are saying that because it showed up twice they refunded us one months rent (which they did not). We sent them a blanked out bank statement showing the charges from the company but they are not requesting a full bank statement showing all information. Can they ask for such sensitive information after we have signed a lease?

I Suggest you start thinking about not using the online payment system any more Since it appears they are having problems with its accuracy and mail a check in for your rent payments far enough ahead of time via confirmed mail delivery so you have something to show you sent it out. Any further communications with the LL do it via real paper letter( keep a copy to staple to your postal receipt ) sent certified mail such as when you tell them the portal is wrong and you were not refunded money.

How is it "sensitive information"? You already provided your account information if I understand how the payment system works. It sounds like your rent payment is automatically debited from your bank account. If that is, in fact, the case, you have already provided that information.

Thanks for the replies. I'm in UT. It's sensitive information because I don't want them to see ALL the transactions on my account. They don't need to know what I spend my money on, unless it pertains to them specifically

SO put it all on real paper sent via certified mail and ask them to prove they made a refund to them and cancel the electronic payment of your rent and pay it via personal check sent with a way to prove you mailed it or take a check to their office and insist on them giving you a receipt.

The problem is, is that they do not know if the items you blanked out contained the second transaction that they think was made. If they cannot see all of the transactions, then you have not actually provided proof that you did not get a refund of the second charge they believe was made.

This is a weird situation. The landlord's system says that the landlord took the money twice from the tenant and refunded the tenant for the second transaction. The tenant is claiming that the rent was only taken once, and that there was no refund, because there was nothing to refund. I am not sure why the tenant is even pushing the issue since the tenant claims that the rent was only taken once.
