What is the name of your state? WI

My Landlord goes through my garbage on a regular basis. Our apartment complex has a community garbage bin and nearly every day he is out there opening up bags and taking out things he feels are valuable. He also claims that he is finding recyclables that people are throwing out and putting them in the right bin.

I know that the Supreme Court has held that you lose all right to privacy when you throw out your garbage, but aren't there specific laws pertaining to your provacy and your landlord? I can't very well keep my garbage in my apartment for weeks at a time.

A: No.

I would suggest buying a shredder or moving.

Another option would be a cardboard box marked "financial records" and some ripe roadkill.

Does your city have any laws forbiding scavaging? the last city I lived in had a ordinance that barred scavaging or salvage of any material left for the sanitation depts recycling unit. Contact your city hall to learn if it has any ords regulating dumpster diving and if the town does then consider wether you wish to make a complaint or not!

Even if they do I would think it would be hard to stop the LL from doing this seeing as the LL pays for the dumpster. (community dumpster)

Well then...

Do you think it is within my rights to terminate the lease? I certainly had no idea he would dig through my trash when signing.

Not for that. Suggestions were given that would take care of security issues. A couple were given that should take care of looking at all.

Just shred the stuff up if you have problems with it. In todays world it is a good idea anyway.

If you are trying to get out of your lease, you are going to have to do better than that.

**A: so what is your gripe?

The garbage is not the real problem, they just found a different place a BETTER place and are grasping at straws in order to get out of their lease.
