The age of consent in NJ is 16. If he really loves you and you really love him, you will abstain until that time. This will also tell you whether he really loves you or not. Going out of state, for sex, as mentioned earlier is a federal crime.

I'm really sorry, but I know at least 3 couples that started to date when he was 17-18 and she was 14. They all are married 15-20 years already and have kids.
And there are a lot of 14 y.o. girls that are not an airhead type and can be very nice significant other for a 17-18 y.o. guy.

Let's see ... I can outline a few cases that I have worked where the wonderful guy who lived a state away actually happened to be someone else entirely. (As NellieBly pointed out)

A person can be anyone online. And even if they meet once or twice, the facade can be maintained. But, once the guy has assumed control of the girl who has runaway, the odds of something horrible happening rise considerably.

If it is love, it will wait a few years. If it is lust, he will get bored in short order and move on.

I'm not playing games. Those "olden times" were 15-20 years ago, and no, I don't think it was ok. Both parties were very selfish. The girls did not think about the legal risk for their BF, and the guys did not think about the potential legal expenses of their parents if they will find themselves prosecuted.
And of course there are pregnancies, but you don't have the statistics of marriage or even just fun relationships
