What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MO

Our lease agreement was from August 1, 2016 to July 31, 2017. When renewing lease, landlord notified us on July 17th that we can renew but want to back date lease renewal to be July 1, 2017 to July 1, 2018.

Is this legal to back date lease when still in current lease?

Thanks

There was no rent increase. They said because they want to have more time to try and re-rent next year in the summer when kids are out of school and more people are moving/renting.

It's legal if you both agree to it.

cooper until your state writes laws that regulate what the conditions are when a landlord can refuse to renew a lease LLs are free to offer leases that are a bit shorter so they can change possible vacancy time lines if someone does not want to renew. SO go back to your LL and suggest that this current lease renewal just be for 10 or 11 months in order to get that anniversary moved. Tenants who have children who want to move often want to do it some time after the last day of school and before the first day of a new school year.
