Sorry, i don't know why this didn't post...
Iowa. My boyfriend and I decided to have a joint account so he added me to his. I received a $4,000 check for an amended tax return and deposited it into the account. Well, yesterday child support recovery took out $3000 (pretty much all of our money) for back support that he owes. I've researched a little and I know that Iowa doesn't have TBE accounts and that ours is a JTWROS account. Is there a way to get the money back?

Yes there is a way to get that money back. Get it from your boyfriend.

I don't know what those abbreviations stand for, but... a joint account co-mingles your money. In other words - what's yours is his, legally. I'd suggest you open an account in your name only, and consider this a lesson learned. You may also reconsider your involvement with a deadbeat. Because yes, he is. And what he does to that kid? He will do to yours if you have one with him.

How is he a deadbeat? Apparently, he is (now) current on his support!

He's only current because he has a chick who makes enough money to bring him current. He apparently couldn't be bothered to get there on his own.

LOL...well he may have once been a dead beat but thanks to the new honey this is no longer the case.

This is a great example of why people who are not married should not play house.

Yeah yeah yeah... A lot of people owe back child support and it doesn't mean you're a deadbeat. $3000 is actually not that much to owe in the scheme of things. He's didn't mean for this to happen and he is already going to pay me back with the money he gets from his school grants next month. That money is supposed to be for his school though and I am still wondering if there is a way to get the money back. I am looking for an answer from someone who actually knows what JTWROS means.... Thank you.

It means you just paid to get his child support current. Previous advice was the best. Don't play house with a deadbeat dad, when you can't afford to lose the money. I suggest you not comingle anymore funds, he might have other debts coming down the pike.

It doesn't really matter if we are married or not, it's a joint bank account.... They would have taken it no matter what...

Not that much in the scheme of things for a credit card or other normal debt.

This is CHILD SUPPORT.

Personally, I'd say that is the first thing a person should pay. Even over taxes or other debt. But, that's just me. I'd sell all that I have to make sure my children have enough.

$3000 is not that much to owe... Dunno about his kid, but that's a heck of a lot of food for a kid. And clothes. You know... necessities. How did he NOT mean for this to happen? HE DIDN'T PAY THE SUPPORT HE WAS ORDERED TO PAY! Did he go back to court to ask for a downward Mod because he had an involuntary change in his income stream? If not? HE MEANT NOT TO PAY IT! HE MEANT FOR HIS KID TO DO WITHOUT! HE WAS A DEADBEAT! And you are okay with that. Because YOU have paid it for him. If you want the money back? You get it from him. Because YOU chose to comingle your money with his.

Silly girl.

Honey it is a joint account, you said the magic words yourself. For this very reason they took HIS money to pay HIS debt. The only way to get this back is for Mr. Current Deatbeat to pay you back.
