To make things clear, I am not currently or have never gone through this predicament. I very much look forward to the day that I become a father and start a family. I just want to start a conversation with the community and any legal specialist about this subject. I hope this could possible help
So, here we go.
When a woman becomes pregnant and is not interested in keeping the child, she can(currently) go out and abort the child (this is not the topic of this discussion). She has every right since it's her body and that's understood. Unfortunately it still happens even if the father wants the child. My main focus is how if a woman becomes pregnant AND she does want to have the child but the father does not, he will have to "deal" with it and more than likely end up with a child support obligation on his hand. I feel that men do not have enough rights in regard to either paternity choices or even parenting rights. Obviously the man can not abort a child without the woman's consent or else this would be considered murder (though somehow abortion in general is not considered such).
I feel, and I'm sure a lot of people could agree, that the correct way to deal with such things is for both parents to come together and decide and plan what they are going to do with finding out about an oncoming child. Unfortunately, this either doesn't happen or it happens and nothing gets accomplished but the mother gets to wholly choose. I feel that the rights between the father and mother have shifted in the last twenty years far to the later side and that it is not at an equal level. The woman will always get what they want, to an extent and it's inevitable in regards to paternity.
I feel though that if a man does not want a child, but the mother does want the child that the man should be able to forfeit his rights and not be enslaved to a child support obligation. I don't see how it is at all fair to the man if a woman can easily go and obtain an abortion, but if he does not want the child that he will be with no legal options to choose from.
I would prefer to not have any replies about "well you had sex, so you knew the risks. Deal with it." I can easily point that back at the women who get abortions because they "are not ready." By that statement it is hypocritical to get an abortion, and double standards are frowned upon.
Im not specifically looking for a state-based opinion, but more a general sense.
