medicare

Just wondering how this process works, i've been out more than long enough to get the benifits and wanted to know what it covers, how much it is, and anything else that's important.

If there is another site I should be looking at regarding this please let me know.

thanks

Medicare kicks in about 29 months after your date of disability (24 months + 5 month waiting period). In your case you qualify now for Medicare. You'll have the option of signing up for Part A, Part B, and Part D (prescription coverage) or all three. Part A basically covers inpatient services while in the hospital but does not include all services such as anethesia. In most cases, it is free.

You have to pay for Part B and D. If you receive coverage now through your employer or spouse's insurance, you'll want to call the benefits person and find out what you should do. In our case, it was recommended that dh just take Part A since he has coverage through me. Medicare and Blue Cross essentially paid 100% for his recent hospital bill.

Basically, you were eligible for coverage by Medicare Part A back in September or October 06. Please check with the Medicare people to see if they are obligated to pay any inpatient services that you may have been billed for since then. I've heard conflicting comments on that.

You'll receive some info on Medicare shortly. You can always call the SSA office to get a phone number or go online and find it if you want to contact them immediately.

I currently have blue cross throuogh my wife's job. I was hoping that this medicare would save us some money, as she has about 500.00 a month taken out of her check for the plan. I've heard something about 93.00 or so being deducted from your ssdi per month for the coverage, and i've also read something about the state helping with that amount.

Again, thank you for your help

From my experience.....

This is just my experience......
I became eligible for medicare 24 months after the ssdi started (which was 6 mo after the date of disability). they sent a card that had medicare part A and B on it and an information packet. (the part b was $96/mo - straight out of ssdi). I already had insurance and just took the part A because it was free. The letter helps somewhat. I kept my insurance mainly because of the RX, I figured out how much I'd have to spend out of my pocket if I kept my ins and if I went the medicare route - my insurance was less - mainly due to RX. I think you may want to figure out the out of pocket too.

After I sent the card back, declining the part b, they sent me a new card and a book on medicare.

So, what your saying is that if you get 1000.00 from ssdi, they take the 96 straight out of that? I've also heard about the state assisting with that 96.00. I probably won't qualify for that since I have coverage thru my wife's job.
