What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York (City)
As information, the New York City Department of Transportation now has available online a means to look up what parking signage is posted at any given street location.
This gives motorists a chance to pre-plan a bit before driving to a location they are unfamiliar with and to scope out what parking restrictions are in place. It also gives anyone receiving a ticket a chance to make sure the signage noted on the ticket is correct.

Just heed the warnings about the current completeness of the available information. I am no big fan of NYC government but I have to say they have their act together when it comes to information technology.
Good luck fighting your New York City Notice of Parking Violation.
