We still do stuff like that. Only we almost never stay in hotels - we camp. The whole point of a vacation is to NOT have a schedule or someone checking up.
Ditto here. When we plan cross country vacations, we make lists of things in states we are going along, with a loose itinerary. I book hotels along the way, on 6pm cancels and web search/update as we go along.

Mine will be 18 soon. Was not willing to put forth the effort needed to learn correctly. I told her she has the right to be a failure in life if she chooses to. I will not enable her to kill someone out of negligence.

She knows she is running out of time, will start college in January and need to drive herself.

OT, sorta, but I just think its funny how much things have changed since I was a kid. We never had an itinerary when we vacationed. We may have had an ultimate destination in mind (going to the Smokies, for example). But a day by day plan? Nope. We went as far in a day as we wanted, depending on how everyone felt and if anything to do caught dad's eye. Found a hotel when we arrived.

Life was so much simpler!
It's not a matter of more simple or not. When you fly, you have an itinerary.

Only for starting and ending points if you choose. That is what I love about unlimited mileage on rental cars.
Exactly.

The last two trips I've taken by plane were a series of one-way trips. From KC to SF, CA and then out of Seattle back to KC and From KC to Baltimore and back via Raleigh/Durham.

There was a lot of ground to cover between flights.

Aaagh... when I was a kid, everything had to be planned for a roadtrip. From where we were going, where we stayed along the way, how long we'd stay, etc. Used to drive me nuts.

My ex and I did the "let's head in a direction and stop/camp where the mood strikes!" deal. Did it when we moved cross-country, a bunch of times after that. But... I gotta say... camping isn't as much fun when your companion is even afraid of chipmunks... ... So manly.
