What is the name of your state? Ca

My husband broke his lease with military orders and a few days before he was supposed to leave his orders were cancelled. Since we were almost to the end of his 30 day notice when his orders were cancelled we found a new place to live and moved in. My husband now has new orders to be deployed and will be leaving shortly. The problem is, the manager from the old apartment says the orders dont count since he didnt leave on that date. We now owe them $5000. Can that happen even though we didnt know the orders would get cancelled on such short notice? Is there anything we can do?
