What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Hello All,

We have an 8 year old child in a catholic school. We pre planned a family trip first week of October once we received the school schedule.

The schedule never noted the Iowa State Test at all. It was after we booked the shows, hotel etc that they informed us of the testing.

Part of the trip has to do with our business and we have no one to look out for our child. Plus he is our only child and we do not do the baby sitter thing, specially for 4 days.

We emailed the teacher of our plans and asked for a make up. She replied that may not be possible, I beleive since its a state test? She was detailed in her reply.

My Question: Can we get in any trouble for this as parents
Thanks and GOD bless

Why are you taking the Iowa State test in California?

@Jeffy: sometimes standardized testing can't be made up here... However, it's very early in the school year for standardized testing here. They usually occur second semester.

does that make a difference?
if so wonder why she did not tell us this.
all she wrote was there is a very slim chance for a make up???
thanks again

I have no idea. Its called the IOWA state test, but apparantly its given in other States...

I have never heard of it before, I believe it does not count on your record like SAT's... I tried googling it and not much out there makes it clear.

I realize that... my kids go through this every year.

I looked up the ITBS for California and Catholic schools apparently use it...Catholic Schools of Orange County California - ITBS/ACRE Assessment... and it can be made up... but it is a hassle... and some school districts won't do it for vacations.

Ahh haaa...

Christian schools over here take the CAT and STAR tests, but never heard of the Iowa test - and no, they will NOT allow makeups for vacations here. Only illness.

However, OP, your child will not be taken away for missing the test, or even missing school, but it's horribly irresponsible for you to schedule a vacation during the school year.

Not sure why were being insulted here...for being concerned parents? Maybe if there were more of us....

Either way before you call us irresponsible, you may be more responsible and CAREFULLY read our post.

1. We planned this AFTER the school schedule was released
2. It is not a family vacation, there is an annual convention that me must attend for our business and we noted that we have no family to leave him with.

Again no need to insult us or anyone here, we come here for help. Why cant people be nice to each other?

The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and Iowa Tests of Educational Development are standardized tests administered in a number of states.

They're named the "Iowa" tests only because they were developed at the University of Iowa College of Education. Sort of like the Stanford-Binet (IQ test) being named for the university where it was revised.

You should consider finding out if a grandparent or someone else you trust can stay home with the child while you go away. Better to not have him miss the test at all if it can be helped.

I remember taking the Iowa Basics when I went to school in Illinois (Catholic school).
It is a test that was created initially for use in Iowa. It is called ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) and is used on a nation wide basis.

Wikipedia really does have some uses.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iowa_Tests_of_Basic_Skills
