Actually, Netgear Orbi routers have a hardware assigned MAC address that CANNOT be changed. There is no firmware or customized firmware available for this item, no interface that allows a user to change a mac address on a permanent basis and the "handshake" between any device and the router itself shows the TCP/IP Level 2 hardware address. PCs (Linux, Macs and Windows) CAN have their MAC addresses changed because you have access to the OS and can assign values. You CAN clone a MAC Address, however, with a Netgear Orbi router, it still sends traffic with the original MAC address from time to time. The point is that the OP made a definitive statement that was incorrect. The OP wishes for us (and, ultimately, the "authorities") to believe that s/he is an expert, yet the OP is incorrect about a basic function of routers that has been present for years. It speaks to credibility.
Routers themselves, if you can have access to a CLI or firmware, can be changed. In fact, for Cisco devices, the method to change the mac address is:
en
config t
int f0/0
mac add 00 00 00 00 00 00
You cannot do that with Netgear Orbis however. You CAN clone the MAC on the router but you are not able to change it.
While parked directly outside their house, there was only 1 network available. Using aircrack and wireshark, I was able to capture packets being sent between 2 devices and review them; 1 of the mac addresses on the network is identical to the one that was shown as assigned to the Orbi router that was sold to me.
I know a lot more than most of you know about how computers operate. I have been doing this for 20+ years and have certifications from SANS Institute, EC Council and (ISC)2 along with many others. I just was trying to make a comment as simple as possible.
