My husbands parents are getting divorced and his dad (my father-inlaw) said that he needed my husband social security number to fill out paper work with his divorce attorney. We both think this is weird sense he is not a minor and thus there would be no custody issues regarding him in the divorce, and he is married so he can't be claimed as a dependent on taxes. Is there any legitimate reason my father in law would need my husbands social security number for paper work with his divorce attorney?

It could have to do with his status as beneficiary on various accounts. Why doesn't he ask why it's needed?

There is absolutely no reason, specifically related to the divorce, that dad would need his social security number. There may be something peripheral to the divorce that dad is trying to do that might require it, but I would insist on knowing exactly why it was needed.
