The penalty depends on the value of the item but shoplifting is, at a minimum, a Class A misdemeanor. If this is your first offense, you will be eligible for a diversion program, this if the ticket cannot be dismissed outright.

You should consult with an attorney in your area.

It is a program offered to some first-offenders. To avoid a criminal record, the offender will be put on probation with conditions that must be met during this probationary period. The conditions (generally) include completing a certain number of community service hours. If all terms of the program are completed to the satisfaction of the court, the charge is dismissed.

You can discuss this with your attorney.

If the item had a value of $22.47, your charge would be a Class A misdemeanor.

With the help of your attorney, you should be able to get the charge dismissed, if not at the outset then after diversion.

Good luck.

$22.47 Not sure what you mean by citation number. 34-14-146 on the pink paper.
The "citation number" is the # of the law in the code that you allegedly broke.

Google "tennessee 34-14-146" and you will get a lots of things about "Theft of property Conduct involving merchandise."

I actually provided the link to the law earlier. Post #6.
Yes, you did.

But in post #10 it seems that our poster seemed to be clueless about the concept of laws being identifiable by a "citation number", and it was rather clear that he had not looked at (or comprehended the content of) the link you so graciously and correctly provided.

So... Teach the man to fish...

Ahh. Okay. I thought my link might have been overlooked, coming as it did before the citation number was given. :)
