The only problem with this is that most all press you see on dog attacks involve pit bulls. When other dogs attack it does not make the news like it does with a pit bull, why? Because pitbull attacks sell papers and are overly dramatized.
Dog bites that cause no real damage don't warrant newspaper stories. The pits get written up so often because of the bitting pressure and jaw size causing far worse damage when they do attack.

I just don't see why it is necessary to have a dog that might tear out the throat of a neighbor kid, or kill the neighbor's dog or cat. As a responsible neighbor, I'm more comfortable knowing that any kiddle that wanders into my yard needn't worry that my dog will harm them. Same with the neighbor's Golden across the street, they don't have to worry about the little kids next door with their dog. I absolutely KNOW that my dog won't kill the neighbors dog or hurt their kid. Can you absolutely know that about your pit?

And a responsible owner would not allow thier "kiddle" to wander into your yard. They wander into mine they go to the pound.

There is no way you can KNOW that for a fact. Your dog could just as easily bite someone as my dog could. It may not inflict as much damage but it could bite at any time.

Can you absolutely know that about your pit?
As I said, noone can make that claim because you never know what an animal is going to do.

My point was that with the research of course there are going to be more pit bull attacks than any other animal because they are reported more often than any other animal.

I have had my Pit for going on 10 years and she has not so much as growled at a person, another animal yes but not a person. I can also honestly say that if she ever did bite me or anyone else she would be put down immediately.

My point was they did research on bites that were reported about in the papers not all dog bites.

Wonder if you would feel the same way if someone broke into your home in the middle of the nite and "puffy the wonder dog" just looked at them and went back to sleep or cuddled up for a nice petting. I may not be able to guarantee my dog would never bite someone but I can guarantee if someone were to come into my house uninvited in the middle of the nite they would get no where near me or my family.

moot point

whether or not pitbulls are the most dangerous dog is a moot point. The point is, the OP is scared of this dog.. and it is over the weight limit (Pitbulls should weigh35-55 lbs... if it is bigger it is most likely an American Stafforshire Terrier)
Remind the landlord of the size limit, and the insurance issues, and call animal control EVERY time this dog bothers you

Really, did you look at the article (on the first page of this thread?, previously posted by GAWM in response to someone else who thought that golden retrievers were above harm) That little child was mauled by a golden retriever.

No one knows what a dog is going to do. No one. I don't care who you are. That is why it is on the owner to behave in a manner that will prevent any type of action. I never leave my dog alone with anyone that has not lived in my home. NEVER. Not because she has ever been agressive, but because there is no need to take the chance, for the same reason that I turn off the iron when I leave the room, and lock the doors when I leave the house.

My dog is always on a lead that enables me to control her, no matter what the circumstance. I have to say that anyone who leads a pit on a stretchy leash as this OP described, is an idiot.

When she goes to the vet, she is muzzled, not because she bites, and not because she is agressive, but because there is no way for me to predict what ANOTHER animal in the room might do, and I have no doubt at who would come out the winner.

I don't have pit because I feel manly that she could tear out the throat of a neighbors pet, in fact, I am quite the girlie girl. I do have a pit because they are highly intelligent dogs, with great senses of humor, and are extremely loving and loyal pets, in the right hands.
The fact that if she was called upon to defend me , she would, and quite effectively, is just a bonus.
