We hired a mason in late September to do some
work in our back yard. He assured us the work would be completed in about a week. We
have a verbal contract only. It is now 5 weeks later and the work is still incomplete.
We keep calling, he says he's coming, and
then doesn't show. Do we have any legal
recourse? (We are in New Jersey)

In theory yes, but while you can cancel, or take him to Small Claims Court, let's face it -- all contractors lie, and promise what they can't deliver. And it will be your word against his, and he'll say with all that rain, snow, sleet, etc. (Get the picture?)

Please look at this site's attorney listings for a real estate attorney in your area. Your state may have rules regarding remedies against unlicensed contractors.
