i think i have been accused of cheating on a final exam. I ABSOLUTELY DID NO SUCH THING AND I SAT IN THE SECOND ROW RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PROFESSOR. in the case that i am accused of this and it is false, what can i do and say? the professor has no proof and if there are cameras in the room it will show i didn't cheat. so what can i say to the dean who is emailing me with an attitude about students in the class cheating.

email i recieved from dean himself attempting to answer my question

"You may email Professor ______ directly. Although she is on vacation (as am I), she does respond to emails. I am also forwarding my response to Professor ------- as well.

I do want to put you on notice however that prior to leaving on her vacation Professor ______ indicated some irregularities with some of the finals. That is, the Blackboard system was failing to add up some of the grades, and in other cases evidence of cheating on the final exams was also apparent. If your case is one of the latter ones, Professor _______ is well within her rights to initiate far more severe actions than merely giving you a D grade. I do not know whether or not this applies in your case as I did not inquire for the identity of the students involved but now think it relevant to inform you of what I already do know. Perhaps you should continue this communication first directly with Professor_______??"

I NEED LEGAL ADVICE AS TO WHAT THIS MEANS.. I KNOW I DIDN'T CHEAT IF I CHEATED I WOULDN'T BE ON THIS SITE RIGHT NOW TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO.. PLEASE HELP

You haven't been accused of anything. You were advised that some students may have cheated. What were you trying to talk to the professor about in the first place?

Duplicate post. (I know the other was originally posted as the duplicate, but it has more responses than this thread.)

initially i thought the professor made a mistake by not putting up my final exam score on a site called blackboard ( it is like an online report card) i then went onto look at my actual transcript online and it showed a D. now the grading process initially was out of 70 points, i had 66.90.. after the final the initial points rose to 110 but i remained at 66.90 which was 70% of the grade and 30% was the final exam (which was not yet counted). i took the final and believe i passed with flying colors because i paid attention throughout the course and studied a lot. after the final exam there was no grade posted for it.. it showed a 0.00 out of 100 points, making my last 30% non existent.. which made my grade a D because 66.90/110 comes out to a letter grade of D. now i contact the TA and the Professor.. no answer (professor is on vacation until September).. the only choice i had left was the chairman of the history department ... and this is what he wrote to me (in the original thread).. he scared me quite a bit.. i'm not sure if that was his intent but it worked. everyone is telling me to wait for the actual professor to return and take action then, but i am just very upset about this D and the fact that the reason why my blackboard might say 0.00 out of 100 is because the prof thinks i cheated? i pray it was a mistake in the system and not the concept of cheating because this was a multiple choice history exam, it wasn't rocket science aka advanced physics. i hope my explanation helped and you can inform me in anything else i need to know..

thank you for your response i appreciate it

Ah. Well this additional information, questions123456, makes your concerns more reasonable. :)

The Dean's letter explains that there were problems with the Blackboard system and some students received grades that do not accurately reflect their scores on the final exam. These problems will, apparently, be corrected and your correct grade will be posted later.

The letter from the Dean would give any student pause because of the way it is worded, but I don't think he meant to imply that you were one of the students who may have cheated. If you didn't cheat and you felt you did well on the final exam, you probably have nothing to worry about. The scoring of your test was probably messed up as a result of the system error.

If, however, you do wind up being falsely accused of cheating, that will be the time to worry, and you can post back here then for some advice and direction.

As a note: When someone posts the same question in more than one area of the forum, the members will generally only respond to ONE of the threads so answers are not repeated. The other identical threads will be labeled as duplicates. That was the reason for Antigone's "Duplicate Thread" post made to your post in the Libel section of the forum and the reason for Indiana Filer's "Duplicate Thread" post here. Although, apparently, we are responding to all of your threads at this point, if you have any other questions, post them to this thread now ONLY. Thanks.

i don't understand what this is? doesn't relate to my post
Look, we are all volunteers here. It gets very difficult to accurately and efficiently help a poster when they post the same question over and over. When we say "duplicate post," it is a sign to the other volunteers that an active thread is already in process.

So yes, this does relate to your post.

Signed, the old lady;)

thank you for helping me out.. i replied to the dean by saying that if there are cameras in the class room then he should review them and see that my eyes where on my exam only. im even willing to take a lie detector test to show i didn't cheat ( i didn't tell him that but i will tell the professor if she ends up accusing me). the reason why im so jumpy on this topic is because im applying to graduate schools and yea my A- in organic chemistry looks great but a D in history makes me look like an idiot!! u have to try and get a D in history! so this is why i am so upset.. in the case that i do get accused should i call my family lawyer, contact the department of education or what? my school is a private university, does NYC dept of education manage it even though it is private?

thank you again

Your option, as it may be, is to work your way through the school's administrative grievance process (it'll be spelled out somewhere - either in the materials you got at registration or perhaps on their website). Right now, it does not appear that you are accused of anything other than being the victim of a buggy grade-posting program.

As an aside, back in my school days, I was accused by a certain English teacher of some unknown form of cheating since "my paper was so good" - the same paper I wrote in the first row of the classroom in front of him. I fought may way up the administrative ladder, and ultimately was told I either re-take the test or I fail the class. Needless to say, I retook the stupid test. (And I still made it into grad school).

Good luck.

That actually reads like a canned email sent to the entire class. I wouldn't lose too much sleep on it, at this point.

This is good advice. You also might look into Student Judicial Affairs or some kind of appeals process if the cheating accusation does go forth. You would sit before a council of your peers and administration, and they would have to present evidence of your cheating. The prof cannot just go on a hunch. You might be asked to take a new final, but you seem to indicate you are ready for it.

They don't often give lie detector tests in college. It's not Maury :)
