What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Hawaii

I moved into my apartment in November 2007. A portion of the driveway on my parking space and a portion of the road were collapsed. Before I moved in, my landlord had the driveway fixed. The problem is that the portion of the road at the end of my driveway is collapsed which causes my car to "bottom out" and scrape on my driveway almost every single time I go on/off my driveway. I just had to take my car in last week because this issue caused a portion of my muffler to snap off.

After talking with neighbors, I found out that it was collapsed because the garbage truck kept parking on that portion of my driveway when they would pick up the trash. I've watched the truck numerous times and they STILL park on that portion of my driveway every single time they come and pick up trash. I have no idea why they keep doing this because there is no need to be on my driveway, as the cans are on the side of the road.

I'm assuming this is the city's problem because it's the road that's collapsed now and not my driveway. I sent an email to the city and also filled out a pot hole request form. Is there anything else I can do to get this issue fixed? I can't keep doing this to my car because I will definitely keep having this problem in the future.

Thanks in advance!

Why did you keep driving over a portion of road that you KNOW is unsafe? You aren't allowed to cause damage to your car by repeatedly driving over the pot-hole, and then claim the city is responsible.

Sorry!

Nooo, sorry, that's not what I meant! I'm not trying to hold them responsible for causing damage to my car or get them to pay for that or anything. I just want to get the road fixed so that I can actually use my driveway without there being an issue.

Ahh, in that case - I agree with SJ (remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease!)

Ok, thanks guys/gals :) I've never done anything like that before, so I don't know how to go about it. Do I just show up at a City Council meeting and say I have an issue?

Start by making some phone calls. I'd start with the city department that handles street maintenance and work up from there...

Hooray!

Thanks so much for the advice!! I was actually waiting to talk to one of my coworkers today who is active in city council stuff... but when I got home from work yesterday, they had filled the hole!!! No one contacted me or anything, so it was a wonderful surprise! :D
