This policy was issued through his employer. The dispute is over his initial choice (or lack thereof) of beneficiary. We asked the insurance company the same thing: How can you issue a policy with no beneficiary? They replied that the proceeds would be paid to his estate.

That's correct - if there was no bene, the proceeds will become a part of the estate.
