My cusody battle, in 2001, cost around $2000. I was lucky that my ex didn't fight after the mediator recommended that I keep primary custody, otherwise it would have been much more.

In CA to modify a 50/50 custody and defend against a moveaway so far I have spent $38,000 to my attorney and $6,000 to the evaluator. I expect to pay about $20,000 more before it is all over with.
