Your insurance policy must come from the state where your car is regularly garaged and where it is registered. And you can't be on your parents' policy if you don't live in their house. Your policy is rated (in part) based on where you live. And every state's insurance laws are slightly different, so yes it is indeed very important that you have your policy from the state where you live.
