THe genre of fantasy literature natutally includes magical beings and events, because the nature of the genre is the creation of beings and events that do not exist in our physical world. The challenge to the author is to create a willing suspension of disbelief when the characters in the book are able to act in ways they cannot in our world, or interact with beings that cannot/would not exist in our world. Magical is certainly part of world of fantasy writings. And it is NOT wiccan or pushing witchcraft, meerly because it is fantastic.

Much is alligorical, as in Lord of the Rings(full of magical events). His collegue's books, the Narnia series, is also chock full of fantasy and magic , although his alligory is more obvious in it's death and resurrection themes.

Fantasy and magical events in literature are not contradictory to religion. Anyone who has ever studied the Narnia or Rings book, for example, is aware of how many religious themes run through them.

Well, there are "Christians" who consider Narnia to be witchcrafty and evil ... in particular Lewis having been a conservative Anglican they regard as 'bad as being Catholic' (generally an overlap of the antiCatholic, the Pope is the "antiChrist," sentiments in the more fundamentalist groups) ... one website I saw outright called Lewis evil and 'the pawn of the devil.' Those opinions are on the fringe, but out there in cyberspace.

Still I would think if the material is objectionable to the parents they should be able to request another book for their child. Children were literate before Harry Potter arrived so I don't expect it is a necessity to read that particular book, if that is the case here.

Honestly, you should look at her posting history.;)
What about my posting history? One was my eldest son in a horrific accident that we are still battling $30,000.00 of medical bills later. Would like to see the photo's? They are quite moving.

Second me having a problem with the way I was treated in the hospital for a bad headache? Just had an MRI on Thursday for the possibility of tumors would you like the results of that test when I get them I would be glad to show you?

You don't know me and I you but you are very quick to pass judgement on me? I love my children and I came her for just advice isn't that what this site is all about? Free advice?

You tell me it is just a book, wasn't Dungeons and Dragons just a game? Until people died and children and adults all accross the world found that game to be much more? We are Christians and we do not condone magic, magical or ghosts or anything of the sort. If you do then that is your belief and you have that right the same right I have not to believe in it. I wasn't saying the school is making him practice witchcraft or say spells and no he can not fly. It is mockery such as this that makes it much easier for satin to do his work. It could be something so simple and innocent looking as a book or a game or even a cartoon. When my son is old enough to decide for himself what religion he wants to believe in then he may do so, but for now it is my job as his parent to make the decision for him and this book is what I feel not appropiate for this family.
I am sure you will ridicule what I have writen here I read your posting history too. This site is suppose to be free advice but I do not see as much free advice as I do the free teasing, mockery and ridicule. Outstanding Advice Unbeatable price? Sometimes it would be cheaper to pay than to be verbally attacked by some of you.
If there is a way to post the photos I mentioned or the results of the MRI please let me know.

There are both religious Christians and very observant Jews that have difficulty with certain things that a public school may teach. For eaxmple, I know of some very observant Jews that don't want their children to have dinosaur decor or video tapes, because dinosaurs are not in the Torah. However, they do NOT expect the public schools to comply with THEIR particular religious beliefs. Those who feel strongly enough about what their particular religious values dictate their children should learn in school do not send them to public school. Those who do. do not require the public school to change what it teaches everybody as to literature, or science to comply with the their religious take on the world..

Then take your child out of the public school system. Apparently there are reasons why he is there in the first place so you will have to decide to either ask the teacher for another book for your child to read or explain to the child that there may be things that he will hear or read about in the outside world that do not mesh with your religious beliefs. That just because something is presented, or taught, does not always make it a fact.

PS. Having the close relationship that I have with him, apparently through my reading of the Harry Potter Series, M is for Mischief and my watching of Bewitched as a child, I can assure you that his name is Satan, not Satin.

However, speaking as a relatively observant Orthodox Christian, I have never understood the rationale of banning certain books. Just as it is possible to listen to music purely for pleasure, it is also possible to read purely for pleasure - and yes, entertainment. We're reasoning beings. Well, most of us.

In addition, most of these books - even those that don't have clear religious themes running through them - at the very least focus on good triumphing over evil. Which is, you know, ultimately where it's at.

Besides - it makes for lively dinner conversation.
