If you think his return was wrong, file an amended return. I am not understanding why you are going about this in a big circle and what you're goal is.
You told me to "butt out" of my nephew's business and I tried to explain to you why I am so involved.

I don't know why you are telling me to file an amended. My nephew's return is fine. It was his ex who illegally claimed the child exemption. Thanks for your help. Let's consider this horse dead.

If the return you have responsibility for is fine, then the IRS will deal with things appropriately and you have nothing to worry about.
