Thirty-two states have mandates that require schools to have safety plans in place, and No Child Left Behind (Title IV) has a requirement that schools have safety plans in place, to address fire, tornado, security and evacuation issues, with a minimum of 2 fire drills and 1 disaster drill per semester.
North Dakota, however, is one of only eighteen states that does not mandate a plan - although they suggest each school district has one in place. State law suggests that schools hold these safety drills at regular intervals.
If you are concerned about the lack of safety planning in your child's school or school district, you should bring your concerns to the attention of the School Board.
(as a note: This information is correct and current to my knowledge, however changes may have been made in North Dakota laws that I am unaware of, so you may want to verify the accuracy)
