Actually, I'm going to disagree with you. That WOULD be a HIPPA violation. Doctors cannot discuss ANYTHING with anyone other than the patient or guardian.Only if the doctor discusses your case... not your attendance or the information you have already given the principal.
See, if you say, "I was absent because I had typhoid." It is legal for the principal to call that doctor and ask, "Did Tami have typhoid?" because YOU already told the principal the nature of your disease.

If that were the case, the school would already have obtained permission for the release of information, which they would forward to the doc's officeUNLESS, and this is a BIG UNLESS, the specifics of the disease are used for accomodation or benefit under ADA or other law.
The specifics of treatment are never in play... but, say, if a worker asks his employer for accomodation because of AIDS, then AIDS may be verified via validated doctor's note.
