If people are looking to protect their designs, they should look not only at copyright laws and copyright protection, but also at trademark laws and trademark/trade dress protection. And, if people want to avoid the risk of an infringement lawsuit, the advice provided in 2007 (and 2008 and 2010) remains the same.
Currently a good website to visit for information on fashion and the law is "The Center for the Study of Fashion, Law and Society," accessible through the following link: http://csfls.org. This site provides fashion-related information and opinion pieces (for example, a lecture by Charles E. Colman titled "Takeoffs, Takedowns and Trademarks") and it provides case law (for example, the recent Swatch AG v Target Corp suit -14-CV-01580-KPF, S.D.N.Y. - filed March 7, 2014).
