the brakes were under spec. the inspecting mechanic said that they should never have passed a safety inspection. I get the feeling that the people on this site aren't really trying to help but instead just like trying to make other people feel stupid
In reality you should have taken action 2 years ago.

If the statues of limitations for small claims has not run out , you could try and sue for the cost of repair for those defects , if you can show the court the cost.

Filing fees are small and the time you spend on it.

You can try adding the converter and arguing it ,but this is a recent event and they can argue anything could have happened with it within the 2 years.

again my complaint is not againsed the dealership but rather the smog place that passed the car in this condition. If I had any way to prove that the car was like this when I bought it they would be liable and in very big trouble. California takes emissions very seriously. No I didn't notice the catalytic converter and niether did anyone else because the only thing it is used for is smog and this is the first time I have needed to do it and I did not wait until the last minute. I started repairs for the smog a month ago and my reg is not due till July 20th. I appreciate those of you who are actually trying to help.

it is a 2003 toyota corolla and yes the cat is all it needs. It passed all emissions tests but failed the visual inspection due to the illegally modified cat

Replacing the cat only is about $100 -$150. Replacing the entire exhaust is about $600. There is a used exhaust in MO for $100 complete.

unfortunately california has it's own catalytic converter that costs alot more than the other 49 states. It has to be one that is 50 state legal. I don't know how the 1400 that my mechanic compares to others but I am getting estimates as we speak. I really do appreciate you trying to help.

Your PM is not active. Check your visitor wall for info on both front and rear cats. I also provided CARB authorization document links. Plz delete when done with them.
