CdwJava, he has called local attorney's but they want anywhere from $5000 to $15,000 to represent him and he does not have that kind of money. If the court appoints him an attorney, does he have to pay for that and if so, what is the cost for that?
In addition to what BOR mentioned, there may be advantages to a court appointed attorney over a DUI attorney. A court appointed attorney or public defender likely has a great deal of litigation experience and also knows how the local system works - often better than high priced, specialized attorneys. Since most DUIs that are beaten rely either on suppression of the stop or suppression of the probable cause for the arrest - and these are rarely successful, a plea usually results. A court appointed attorney can often work that out in short order. The benefit of an experienced DUI attorney comes into play when the case relies either on challenges to the technology or, in some cases, challenges to the specifics of the law with regards to DUI. Even DUI attorneys very often plead these down rather than go all the way to trial, and a court appointed attorney can do that more efficiently and cheaper.

To Isis1---For you to include the quote below in your answers was not helpful in any way. I didn't come here looking for cheerleaders. Since I know nothing about DUI's, I came on this site looking for help. If you are here to help people understand the law, I suggest you not include this quote this in your answers. It is rude and does nothing for your credibility.

That's part of her signature line and has no bearing on your questions. The seniors on here often encounter people who are not a) polite b) sane c) possessing of any common sense or class whatsoever. Signature lines tend to be composed of favorite retorts to some of the nonsense they patiently deal with on here.
