What is the name of your state? California
My brother in law has Downs Syndrome and has been on SSI for most of his adult life. He participates in a work program and has a monthly pay of somewhere near $180 (whee for pennies an hour!)
Recently, his father passed away and his mother applied for him to receive survivor social security benefits. As soon as that was approved, SSI then notified her that they were going to cancel his SSI and also he would be dropped from MediCal. The social security benefits haven't even started yet, but are projected to be around $1,000 a month. His medical bills would exceed this, especially considering an upcoming eye surgery that will easily top $48,000 - four years of his Social Security benefits.
Any thoughts as to a) if the social security benefits negates both the federal and state SSI benefits, b) if there is a method to maintain at least the MediCal benefits? Household net income varies dramatically - the family gets sole income from a family operated store - their income depends upon what sales are that month.
