My stepson, age 20, has his own insurance and a vehicle in his name. He lives with us. If he is at fault in an accident, can they try to collect from his mother and me because he lives with us?

Of course they can try.... HOWEVER, there is no basis in their claim. You cannot be held liable for anothers debts or obligations... unless you agree to be.
