We completed a job for a contractor but after 2 months, we had not received payment. We contacted them and were told that there were problems with the job and they would be subtracting from our invoice the costs of repairing the job. This seems reasonable if we had been contacted and refused to repair the work but we were never contacted or notified that there were any problems at all. Is this legal?? What is our responsibility toward warranty of the project at this point where other contractors have been involved in the work??

Your question is really a contract type question. The resolution of which depends on what state you did the work in and that state's laws that may apply to your given work. They should certainly have contacted you immediately as they feel there were problems with your work. Now they hired others and are going to pay your bill after discounting some money based on the cost of repairs. Personally, I would say that you should attempt to resolve this issue by using a mediation firm near you. You can read up on mediation at this site's BBS. Just scroll down from the main site (WWW.Freeadvice.com) and you will see it.
