I am quite disturbed about the POA also. Yes, if there is an issue then getting a POA can be necessary but its definitely not necessary to have one for every client.
I agree. A POA is not needed just to prepare and file a return. Absent some additional facts that indicate that the CPA would need to represent the OP before the IRS or the state I see no reason for the CPA to have asked for that. Several things about how this CPA operates causes me some concern. He may simply not be a very good business person, but whatever is going on I wouldn't go back to this guy next year if I were the OP.
