Try keeping it in perspective w/humor.

If you can figure out who he is, AFTER you file a police report for stalking, you could take HIS picture, take him coffee and casually mention the police report, ask him to help you carry groceries...to the porch only, let him know you need someone to mow the lawn, pull weeds, paint the house.

tell him eavesdropping would be SO much easier to do from the ladder as he cleans out the rain gutters.

You could even use him as a messenger for dad, like, say, if you want to change the pick up times/place. :D

I am soooo not impressed with parents or grandparents who do this.
I have NEVER suggested a client hire a PI. I have had one case where a PI was trailing my client which made life interesting since they eventually reconciled. Yeah -- I have no idea.

I am leery of tape recording unless it is done in public and the child is unaware of it. I tell my clients, however, that during a child custody case or divorce they need to act as though they are being recorded at all times and all of their actions/words will be used against them.

Sometimes it prevents my clients from unleashing on the other party with swearing, anger and other things that could get them in hot water.

You are absolutely correct (of course) :D I always try to think that way.
