Yep ... a domestic that turned to ambush, and one officer was on his way home and decided to roll by to act as cover ...

And people wonder why cops are on edge these days?

There truly are no words to express how ugly this world is becoming. Everyday you turn on the news and more people are being killed.

My family is full of officers and I am scared every time the phone rings that it's going to be the call everyone dreads.

My prayers and condolences go out to each and every officer that wakes up everyday and goes out to protect their area. Unspeakable Courage.

This last week or so has been just one shooting tragedy after another - what's going on with people?

Seems like everyone we come in contact with wants to fight with us... victims, witnesses, suspects, bystanders... everybody. Every day has been like a full moon on a 90 degree Friday night. I haven't seen this many fights and shootings since the early 90's crack explosion.

I don't think it's just caused by the crappy economy, either. This has been building for quite awhile. People in general have gotten progressively more callous and self-involved.

Four more years and I can retire with my hide more or less intact.

I'm eligible for retirement in 37 months and 11 days (but who's counting) ... but, since I will have two kids in college and one still in middle school at that time, I probably can't afford to do so.

It's a general malaise and a change in societal mores, I believe. In the broadest sense we have become a society immune to violence and bad behavior. Such things have become the norm. Look at our sports heroes - thugs, criminals, druggies, etc. ... our music ... video games ... movies ... everything.

Today's pop culture icons are not paragons of virtue, but purveyors of vice.

If Christ were to return today, he'd be roundly ignored because he would not be a party animal. About the only news coverage he'd get would be if he cast the moneylenders out from the temple, and then the headline would read, "Christ Assaults Bankers! Exhibits Lack of Tolerance!"

Why are things the way they are?

First and foremost, it is the economy. When people are hungry or afraid that they may become hungry, they get stressed and and agitated.

Second problem is the message of hate. During the elections and even more so after that, the "right" has been preaching hate. That has been their entire election campaign and their only message since then:

Hate immigrants, they are taking your jobs.

Hate minorities, they are taking your money through welfare.

Hate brown skinned people, they are all illegal immigrants that are bleeding the system dry.

Hate black skinned people, they are the criminals stealing/murdering/raping you.

Hate the government, they are trying to take your guns and your money.

Hate anyone who is happy because he is happy at your expense.

Hate everyone who is poorer than you because he is receiving the money the government is stealing from you.

Hate everyone who is richer than you because he got that way by keeping you down and stealing from you.

Hate the gays because god hates them.

Hate someone, hate everyone, we do not care why you hate, just hate, hate, hate......

What do you think the consequences will be when someone is constantly hearing hate, hate, hate, hate..... ? Even those who are not part of the ever shrinking "right" and do not agree with any of their ideology are still hearing the message of hate. Eventually people will act out, it is quite expected given the circumstances. And unfortunately it will get A LOT worse.

In October, 1993, Charlotte officers Andy Nobles and John Burnette were killed in the line of duty. My husband says as word of what happened spread throughout the city, crime came to an almost standstill that night. Everyone was shocked, and even the criminals seemed subdued as if there was an unspoken "Tonight, we're not going to mess with you."

I wasn't aware that you're an officer too, Curt. Bless you, too. My husband also has just about four years to go, a little less. I keep teasing him that he'd better re-up or something because I am NOT giving up my few hours of having the house all to myself at night. But, of course, I'm praying for that day to come.
