Okay, here's where we are going with this.

The sick time policy is clearly discretionary, which means he does not have a big buildup of paid sick time he can use to receive his full salary while he is recovering.

Additionally, the disability plan is there to be used.

Additionally, he is not entitled by law to be paid at all during a full week of absence, let alone his full salary.

I realize that you are hoping that somehow someone will come up with a law that requires that he be allowed to use a somehow available bank of paid sick leave that will allow him to be paid in full for the time he is out. There is not.

What his employer is requiring is entirely legal, quite common, and I don't see any way around it.
